Chapter I: IntroductionThesis StatementMore deaths from drug abuse are caused when medical practitioners prescribe these drugs in a very 'casual' way. This is what is happening in Maine and this needs to be stopped as the research indicates that overdose of prescribed drugs lead to alarming rate of deaths in Mainers. Purpose Of The StudyThe purpose of this study is to explore the benzodiazepine prescribing practices among NPs in Maine. The findings of this study are intended to assist policy makers and researchers to better understand the availability of benzodiazepines and develop methods to assist in decreasing their abuse.Importance Of The StudyBenzodiazepines are obtainable by prescription or individuals can get hold of it by illegal resources. More commonly, they are recommended for fretfulness, muscle contraction, sleeplessness, and alcohol retraction, in conditions of epileptics as well as other convulsion disorders. The consequence benzodiazepines may conclude in impaired way of thinking, sleepiness, respiratory depression, cardiovascular failure, arrhythmias, hypo tension, unclear vision, dizziness, diplopia, bewilderment, ataxia and weariness (Aparasu et al., 1998). Furthermore, the overindulgence of this medicine is widespread, all the more when it is taken in combination with additional materials like alcohol, tranquilizers, or downers that as a result brings about a synergistic outcome that adds to the possibility of overeat and loss of life. As such misuse of benzodiazepines is also more and more associated with motor vehicle losses all over the country and seemingly as well in Maine (Kallan, 1998). The nurse practitioners (NPs) have the regulatory permission to give out Class IV drugs, wherein benzodiazepines fit in. At the moment, there subsists a lack of information as to the recommending practices of benzodiazepines amongst NPs. Thus, the importance of this study lies in exploring the knowledge about the drug that is not very common among the NPs and what are the factors that lead the NPs to prescribe the drug without establishing a practice that involves knowledgeable judgment.Research QuestionsThe primary research questions for the study would be:What are the conditions under which benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed? Is the prescription of benzodiazepines used in therapeutic treatments or are they given casualty for comfort against depression and anxiety? What are the side effects of dose and overdose of Benzodiazepines? What do the NPs know about the benzodiazepines? What are the perceptions about the Benzodiazepines among the nurse practitioners in general, and in specific in Maine? What attitudes do nurse practitioners have towards benzodiazepines? The secondary research questions for the research would be:What measures is the government in Maine taking to control the misuse of benzodiazepines? Can the misuse of benzodiazepines be reduced if NPs stops prescribing the drug? What worse may become if the drug is declared illicit for prescription? What may be the conflicting issues for normal and therapeutic use of benzodiazepines?Rationale Of The StudyA lot of people die every year due to overdose of this drug and still there are suspicions about the death among the NPs, although there are clear indications, and many researches also point towards the fatality effect of the drug ...
