1.2 Background of the Study

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), also called Pervasive Developmental Disorders, represent, contrary to what used to think, a common problem that affects 0.6% of children. The basic feature is that there are major difficulties in establishing normal social relationships with children of the same age. They also tend to have problems with language, both reading comprehension skills - speech, as in the social use. The third characteristic of children with ASD is mental rigidity, objectified by a lack of imaginative play, by restricted interests and patterns of resistance to change.

The diagnosis is based on the nuclear problem identification and psychological testing. In general, it is also necessary to perform blood tests, and in specific cases, nuclear magnetic resonance studies and EEG.

In ASD, the approach is quite complex. These are children that are placed on a spectrum that can range from a relatively mild, allowing the child's own understanding of his personality, to severe problems that block social interaction. Within the concept of ASD include Asperger syndrome, characterized by a high level of intelligence and language, but with strong difficulties in social relationships.
