Education for Diabetic Patients

Education for the Diabetic Patients

Introduction

The diabetes is at the rise and the common illness found in the entire world. There are more than 3 millions of people suffering from this chronic disease in the United Kingdom with the estimation of around 850,000 people suffering with the disease who do not even know about the existence of diabetes.

The diabetes is the severe disease where the amount of glucose in the body becomes too high that body stops accepting it and denies to use it properly. The diabetes causes the body to lose the ability to control the level of blood sugar. It happens mainly due to the inadequate production of insulin in the pancreas and stops glucose to enter in to the body's cells. Hence, insulin is produced by pancreas. Basically it is a hormone which allows glucose to enter into the body cells that is consumed as the fuel for energy for performing work that is why is vital for life (Edelman & Gattullo, 2009). The body stops using the glucose as a fuel when a person has diabetes instead the glucose stays in the blood and does not turn in to the energy which results in high blood sugar levels.

The diabetes education and management hold a great importance with the rapid rise in this chronic disease. Educating the diabetic patient about the blood sugar control is essential as to evade the long term health complications. In this study, I as qualified nurse, intend to provide the in depth insight over the diabetes to the patient dealing with type 2 diabetes for about eight years. I would also tell him about the ways to control and maintain this chronic diabetic illness with the education and empowerment.

Discussion

Diabetes is the serious disease and results in copious severe complications but no complete cure has been found since now however, there are only techniques and ways to manage it (CDC 2007). The patient education holds an integral part in dealing with the rising epidemic of diabetes in the entire world. The diabetes is with the person all the time round the clock so the education is the main pillar of the care in order to keep it in control. Education gives the empowerment to self-manage the diabetes on daily basis. Diabetic patients need to learn about the diabetes in order to adjust with this lifelong disease. Generally patients do not know much about the blood glucose monitoring system to maintain their sugar levels and even they are unaware of how sugar intake impacts their blood glucose levels. Therefore, the diabetic patient should be educated about his disease to understand how his body works at certain conditions and what actions are required to be undertaken to cope up with the endless disease (Wittman, 2012).
