Effect of Drug Use on Families

Effect of Drug Use on Families

Introduction

The children living with drug addicted parents are under a constant risk of developing behavioral problems. Such parents due to their drug addiction are unable to provide social guidance to children. Research indicates positive relationship between parent's drug use and the tendency of children towards criminal activity (Hoffman & Johnson, 1998, Gross & McCaul, 1991, Denton & Kampe, 1994, Keller et al, 2002). There have been researches in the study of external and internal environment of household and their effect in the lives of the children. In the current research, we will review the effect of parental drug use on the children's poor educations progress, dangerous sexual behaviors, grave criminal tendency and drug use reported by the children themselves. Our research will test if the unacceptable behavior of the children is only caused by the research proposal.

Discussion

Past research indicates that the involvement in the use of drugs and criminal activity has been linked to the parent's use of drugs, the internal and external environment, the structure of families, etc. The use of drugs creates numerous problems in the social life of children at home, in environment and at employment, home and school. The performance in these avenues gets affected which results in the anti-social acts and psychosis which causes an intergenerational rotation of severe compulsion towards crime and drug use. Jackson (2012) postulated in the research that the teenagers living in homes of parents, who are drug addicts, face divorces and remarriages of parents and new parents, will report by themselves about these issues, and their neighborhood is constantly changing. The research conducted by Jackson proved the above hypothesis to be true. When the research conducted an analysis considering all the variables, the research extended the previous literature that the children's use of drugs is influenced by the drug use of parents. The literature has however not considered the difference between illegal and legal use of drug and if the differences in the drug usage in home have encourage the children to use drugs (Newcomb & Bentler, 1988: Keller, Catalano, Haggerty, & Fleming, 2002, Stanger, Higgins, Bickel, Elk, Grabowski, Schmitz, Amass, Kirby, & Seracini, 1999; Nurco, Blatchley, Hanlon, & Grady, 1999).

The research in the areas of legal drug use is very important to be carried out in predicting the tendency of involving in the crime. It has can also be observed that the research, indicating the relationship between the parents use of drugs to the use and reporting of drugs by teenagers, is correct as many children have the access to legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol. These drugs are very easy to obtain from the retail outlets which also exhibit the significant predictive effect on the young population. The environmental factors such as incomes disparity and lack of social order makes others treat these children differently and often results in discrimination. The discrimination and adverse treatment aggravates the feelings of these children who then reports to rebellion ...
