Effective Interrogation Techniques by Law Enforcement Officers

Introduction

An effective interrogation is regarded as a process of questioning by suspects and police executives regarding any involvement in the criminal activity for that the investigation is compulsory. The process of interrogation will involve a law enforcement officer who accused the suspect and the interrogations are scheduled at the last of the entire investigation process, as the evidences and proofs have to be gathered and reviewed before making some conclusions. Sometimes, when the behaviour of the suspect is not so well then a simple interview is changed in the process of interrogation and this step of the process is to so light. During the interrogation, if the tone of the interviewee has changed to a hesitative tone of accusatory then there are possibilities to start the investigation. In the process of interrogation, an investigator or the officer will ask most of the questions rather than simple talking and the questions which are enquired by the law enforcement officer will be less open-ended and more direct.

Explanations

Investigative interrogation is a necessary component of the process of investigation which is done by law enforcement officers without taking any actions against accused. This process was started because most of the information can only be gathered from people who are present at the time of any criminal activity or any incident. During such process, an officer does interrogation by seeing all the potential suspects and possible witnesses and then tries to elicit the information as much as possible. If in case, the interrogation officer felt that the accused is lying and trying to hide some relevant information then he generally still tries not to confront with the accused rather focus on asking the queries. In many cases, it is a great challenge for the interrogation officer to catch the lie of the accused and still follow up the conduction of questioning to disclose some more information (Reid, 2011).

Challenges faced by Law Enforcement Officers

There are so many challenges which are faced by the law enforcement officers when they have to do some interrogation in cases of some serious investigations. Some of them are mentioned below.

An interrogation is regarded as custodial if the interrogator has been undertaken into some custody or has been deprived of his freedom of asking question in any way then it will be really a challenge for the law enforcement officer as he would not be able to disclose much information (Barron's, 1991). To overcome this challenge, it is a requirement that the agencies of the law enforcement officers should relay some specific warnings before initiating any custodial type interrogation. Such warnings are comprised of the privilege of suspect against his right to present the attorney and any type of self-incrimination.

Language barriers can be a challenge and difficulty for the interrogative officers as the accused do not understand the questionings of the interrogative officer nor the suspect understands his or her answers and responses as per the interview ...
