Introduction

Warfarin us an anticoagulant also known under the names Warfant, Jantoven, Lawarin , Coumadin, Waran and Marevan. This drug is popularly known as blood thinner while not affecting the viscosity and thickness of blood. It acts on the liver to decreasing the quantity of key proteins in the blood which allow the blood to clot. Warfarin is a synthetic derivative of coumarin, a chemical found naturally in many plants, particularly in the Asperula odorata. It is also found in lesser amounts in licorice, lavender and some other species. Initially, warfarin was marketed as a pesticide against rats and mice, and is still popular for this purpose, although developed more powerful poison ever since (Stahmann, Huebner, 2001, pp. 513).

Effects of the warfarin use

It is an anticoagulant drug that prevents the formation of blood clots in the blood acting on vitamin K. It is not able to dissolve clots but prevent from getting bigger. The adverse effects of warfarin are usually rare but can be significant. These include the following: bleeding, blood in urine and faeces, red spots on the skin, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, mouth ulcers and skin rashes, loss of hair, fever and decreased number of leukocytes (white blood cells) levels. It can cause other adverse effects such as increased values ??of liver enzymes or agranulocytosis (decreased number of granulocytes in the blood). Warfarin may cause other adverse effects. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (clot formation in the lung).It also helps in prevention of myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary thromboembolism and blood clots associated with other heart diseases.It is important to respect the scheduled time.
