Electronic Voting Systems

Electronic voting system is a technique in which voting is done by using electronic mediums. There is a possibility in near future that elections are conducted electronically. Electronic voting is quite different from the online voting system, where the users have to vote through Internet. In electronic voting system, polling stations are equipped with the electronic voting machines that are known as Direct Recording Electronic Voting systems. By using this machine, the voters are required to tough the screen, on the icon that represents the party, which then gets noted down on a paper and the voter gets receipt of it. The voter is then required to drop that receipt in a properly secured box till the count is over.

Advantages of Electronic Voting System:

Electronic voting system has number of advantages over the traditional voting system: (Kenski, 2005)

It is less costly than the traditional voting system. It saves money by decreasing the expenses of location, administration and management including the reduction of personal expenses.

The tabulation of results can be done more easily and quickly. Once the voting is done, the computer immediately starts counting.

It gives improved and better accessibility. The voters can go for voting at particular polling places, home, or any place where they can get easy access to the internet. People can access for voting even from their mobile phone in order to vote.

The accuracy percentage is higher

Lowers the human risks

Decrease the rate of mechanical and technical error

Electronic voting decreases the risk of uncertainty as the voter will be making the choice by himself by touching the screen

Electronic voting also minimizes the requirement of counting again and again as the tabulation is done by the computer(Kenski, 2005)
