Emotional Climate at Work In Relation To Worker Productivity

Introduction

This paper discusses that how emotions affect people in a work place. Further, it examines that how these emotions are induced within the employees, whether be it positive or negative emotion. However, depending upon attributes of emotions, that is positive or negative; consequently it can bring about positive and negative changes in the productivity of concern employees in the organization. In the following paper we are going to discuss the consequences of emotional climate in the workplace.

Discussion

The Definition of Emotion

The emotion is described as a psychological state of a person. This condition can be positive or negative and is generated by a situation. It can manifest itself in various ways. For example, if shame it blushed, and in case of panic, the individual may tremble. These emotions affect our behavior. It is therefore advised to control them in society and especially in the workplace. In general, one can experience six main emotions at the workplace (Kiefer, 2005):

• Fear;

• Anger;

• Shame;

• Panic;

• Sadness;

• Joy.

Negative Emotions Yields Positive Results

A study conducted by a professor at Columbia University has shown that the expression of emotions, especially negative emotions, is beneficial for the organization and relationships within a company. According to this study, expression of anger and other feelings encourages moral and social behavior, besides being a form of self-regulation. On the contrary, the study found that it is more difficult to work with someone who does not express and share their emotions with other feelings and express them openly.

Generally people think that emotions are not welcomed in the workplace. However, a study conducted by a professor at Columbia University indicates that emotions, even if they are negative or anger, can be very good for the organization as a whole. The management of these emotions is a challenge for human resources in the organization because, well managed emotions, have many beneficial effects and bring positive productivity.

Is It Irrational to be Emotional?

In the workplace, even the slightest emotional outburst, can make a professional as unreasonable or irrational, raising doubts about their personal competence (Hartel, 2005). You could say that this is the normal attitude to an emotion in a business environment today. But is it really irrational to be emotional? That's the question around which has given a recent research debate a new turn.

It depends on what is meant by irrational here. An extensive analysis conducted showed empirical findings that aimed at understanding the effects of emotions and their relationship to rationality. This has applied to the direction of the workforce and the management of organizations in order to measure the workforce productivity.
