Energy conservation in United States of America Universities

Abstract

Energy retrofits and the implementation of conservation measures can be a cost-effective means of reducing Cornell University energy consumption. Changing Cornell University HVAC functioning schemes work equally well and can result in savings through reduced gear purchases as a outcome of top burden shaving. (Chan 2007) In this paper, a whole Cornell University energy analysis is performed on a large five-storey Cornell University (approximately 28,000 m2) located on the Cornell University. A fairly intensive monitoring of the energy inputs to this Cornell University was undertook at diverse times over a one-year period. The U.S. Department of Energy Cornell University simulation software was compared to the monitored performance. (Jayyousi 2003) These assessed results supplied the cornerstone for verification and tuning the model. This form has generally been discovered to be reasonably accurate, supplyd Cornell University conceive or building parameters and HVAC functioning situation are well defined, else comprehensive form tweaking can be required to fit the experimental data.

Introduction

The verified form was utilised as a means to examine some power conservation opportunities. These included modifications to the Cornell University envelope, the use of occupancy sensors, cold deck temperature set point changes to reduce air flow and ventilation air reduction during certain unoccupied periods. Discussion

The Cornell University building under study is located in Saskatoon, United states, which is at 52.2 degrees latitude and 106.7 degrees longitude. The weather in Saskatoon features large heating system loads in winter and somewhat little chilling burdens in summer. (Aburas, Fromme 2001) .It is a five-storey Cornell University, containing offices, classrooms, cafeteria, a large environment chamber area, underground parkade and a large central atrium. The Cornell University building is relatively new with construction completed in 1991. The mechanical equipment is housed in a penthouse above the peak floor. (US Department of power, 2009)

The general layout of the Cornell University building consists of three wings as shown in Fig. 1. The centered wing faces north and characteristics the large atrium, cafeteria and two major entry vestibules. The other two wings continue from the central wing at 45 degree twists to face northeast and northwest. (US Department of Energy, 2001) The wing that faces northwest comprises half of the environment chamber area, while the other half is located in the centered wing. The environment chamber area is located on the first floor of the Cornell University. The laboratories and classrooms are located in the centre areas of these wings, while the agencies are located on the perimeter. The total floor area of the Cornell University building is approximately 28,000 m2 (300,000 ft2).
