Engineering and Environmental Ethics

Engineering and Environmental Ethics

Aims of the assignment

The aim of this study is to address the changing role of engineers in industry and society with specific reference to the increasing environmental pressures on industry. This paper also gives a brief introduction to the Clean Technology paradigm is provided. The paradigm is presented as the ideal philosophy guiding future approaches to environmental protection

This paper will be developed into a requirement for an increased emphasis on continuing personal and professional development of engineers and into demands for changes in engineering education at universities.

Objectives of the assignment

The objectives of this study is to offer ecological ethics model presents environmental scientists and practitioners a useful analytical tool for identifying, clarifying, and harmonizing values and positions in challenging ecological research and management situations. Just as bioethics provides a critical intellectual and problem- solving service to the biomedical community, ecological ethics can help inform and improve ethical decision making in the ecology and conservation communities.

Learning opportunities within the assignment

The learning opportunities are to solve ethical problems is essential to the education of all engineers. Engineering ethics problems are complex and ill structured with multiple perspectives and interpretations to address in their solution. In two experiments, we examined alternative strategies for engaging ethical problem solving.

Greatest challenge and how do plan to tackle it

There is no doubt that the situation in which the modern world and civilization have found themselves represents a great challenge for philosophy and ethics. There is the need to refer theoretically to global processes, phenomena and tendencies, to reveal their mechanisms and also to engage actively in the stream of practical actions. The consciousness of the need to protect the nature is confi rmed by philosophical-ethical refl ection by the effects of its results. Both ecological philosophy and environmental ethics have clearly defi ned the object of their research interests and have already achieved a high level of methodological self-awareness. They are also contributing signifi cantly to the theory and practice of ecological education as well as to specifi c actions in the sphere of protecting the natural world.

Engineering and Environmental Ethics

Introduction

Engineers in their role of designers and implementers of technology generate an impact on the way we work and live. Using technology "the intelligent organization and manipulation of material for useful purposes" engineering provides not only for food and shelter but also for comfort and luxury and, on the negative side, produces environmental impacts which accumulate incrementally to unsustainable levels. Engineers find themselves in a pivotal position for technical development but are increasingly aware that their technical decisions have financial, social and environmental implications. A need for a more responsible engineering activity has thus been identified and is reflected in the Clean Technology paradigm, which describes a new approach to technology development and application. Recent shifts reflecting a new understanding of production and efficiency have started to question conventional environmental protection activities. Thus, the environmental debate has been responsible for fundamental changes in business ...
