Introduction

The engineer first responsibility is to them. His or her obligation is to constantly seek to improve his or her professional knowledge and skill and to utilize those skills and knowledge in a careful and proficient manner in their practice. After satisfying the obligations to themselves as a professional, the engineer must be devoted to his or her obligations to the public.

An engineer should always reflect on the consequences of his or her designed products. Precisely because these concerns are difficult to discern, they must be given initial attention. The first step in this process is acquiring an understanding of the law as it relates to the particular project. The obligation extends beyond merely abiding by the law. The engineer has a responsibility to avoid any decisions or changes that which would adversely affect the safety of the public. They should serve their clients competently and in a professional manner, and should exercise unprejudiced and unbiased judgment.

Engineers also have rights as well as responsibilities that come with their profession. But they also have rights that they have regardless of their engineering status.

This paper addresses the growing importance of ethics in today's society. Many professional societies have adopted formal codes of ethics for their organization and members. However, the engineer as a manager has an obligation not only to his profession but to his employees, organization, and the public as well to enforce ethical decisions and behavior at all times.

They have the right to privacy, the right to engage in activities outside their jobs, right to object to company policies without retribution and the right to due process. These are what most free individuals have and engineer is entitled to these same rights.

What is meant by “ethics is not geographic or cultural”?

To be ethical means to do the right thing. True, the right thing is up to one's interpretation often, but there are certain situations in which it's pretty common sense what the ethical choice would be. With that being said, No matter what your location or surroundings are you should always carry some ethic beliefs. Every cultural or person regardless of his or her background has some kind of guideline they live by. Ethic is never something that can be held just by one group of people or a certain area. The only thing is to what standard it is held to.

Casuistry, a method of resolving questions of conscience by applying moral principles or laws to concrete cases. Although the case method is used in many professional schools as diverse as law and business administration, the term casuistry is usually restricted to the realm of ethics or moral theology. Casuistry has been used as a teaching vehicle by religions and philosophies seeking to inculcate a moral code.
