What is Enlightenment

Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the incompetence to use one comprehends without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its origin lies not in need of comprehending, but in need of determination and bravery to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude! [Dare to know] "Have bravery to use your own understanding!"--that is the motto of enlightenment.

Laziness and cowardice are the causes why so large a percentage of men, long after environment has issued them from alien guidance (natura-liter maiorennes), nonetheless gladly stay in lifelong immaturity, and why it is so straightforward for other ones to set up themselves as their guardians. It is so straightforward to be immature. If I have a publication to assist as my comprehending, a pastor to assist as my conscience, a doctor to work out my diet for me, and so on, I require not use myself at all.
