Along with increasing awareness of the problem, a better understanding of its causes and treatment has developed'. There is medication for ADD which will only alleviate the symptoms.

Although ADD/ADHD is one of the most researched neurological conditions, the cause of it is not known. Research has shown some that ADD could be genetic. (Barkley, 2000) Sometimes, when a child is taken to get diagnosed, the parent often walks out of the doctors office diagnosed themselves. Research has also shown that people who have ADD/ADHD have problems with the chemicals that send messages in the brain. And while it is commonly believed to be true, eating too much sugar does not cause ADD.

Specific details

There is no known cure for ADD, although there are several types of medications used in the treatment of attention deficit disorder. These include Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Strattera, and Dexedrine. While taking one, or possibly two, of these medications can be helpful, having psychotherapy sessions along with the medication is the best course of action for treating ADD. It may take time to determine the best medication for each individual. Also, the dosage may vary depending on many factors, not just weight. A doctor may adjust the dosage over a period of time to control the side effects and to achieve the best results. (Barkley, 2000)
