Introduction

The term Ethics refers to the study of moral principles and value-systems of an individual or a social group. It involves the examination of an individual's conduct and their perception of the rights and the wrongs, the fair and the unjust, and virtue and frailty. It is on the basis of these ethical values that one decides what should be done and what should not be done (Peter, 2009).

These have a direct influence on one's thoughts and actions and ultimately on one's decision-making. For this reason, Ethics is considered an important aspect in all the professional fields and organization. Almost all the companies follow a Code of Ethics that defines the “Do's” and the “Don'ts” for its members. These serve as guidelines for acting in various professional situations and circumstances. This applies specially to the medical professionals who are often confronted by crisis where multifaceted decisions are to be made regularly (Biech, 2011).

The ethical and moral values of an individual are determined by the social and the legal system in place, the organizational structure that he works in and his own personal experiences and interests. Similarly, in an organizational setup one's ethical behavior is shaped by the leadership of their managers and the culture they reinforce. It is also important that one's choice of actions conforms to the norms of reasons and logic in order to preserve moral and ethical integrity.

Ethical Self-Assessment and Individual Decision-Making

An individual's perceptions and moral values have a direct bearing on their own ethical choices and decisions. These principles define how a person responds to different situations and justifies his selection of an alternative from the options available to him. People with different values and opinions may look at similar things differently. Ethical self-assessment offers a medium through which professionals can identify a balanced and heedful approach for analyzing the ethical and moral aspects that relate to their routine work (Morrison, 2006). It helps to understand the moral responsibilities that are binding on professional relationships.
