Introduction

According to Tannenbaum et al, (1996) affirmed that team leadership is a significant trait of effective team performance, and it almost has an effect on every aspect of team effectiveness model. Interaction and communication between a leader and its team are very important factors that contribute to team outcomes (Zaccaro et al, 2001), as well as the success or failure of a team is highly dependent on team leaders.

Discussion

The functional approach that explains leadership practices as goals are specific that leaders of a team have to achieve in order to make certain team functionality and fulfills the needs of a team to be effective (Fleishman et al, 1991). In order to execute team effectively, the leaders have to perform certain tasks that are search, structure and evaluate information regarding goals of a team that have to be accomplish by the team; secondly, after establishing goals and team tasks are clear then team leader has to make a concrete plan addressing how goals are achieved, how resources will be utilized, and what will be the communication channels. Later on, team leader has to mange team personnel by motivating them as a team, and provide effective feedback. Finally, management of material resources includes obtaining and allocating material.

(Burke et al, 2006) highlights the several characteristics of effective team. Teams need to be directed, real, structured, have support of leaders in order to optimal performance. It asserts that leadership behavior is task centric, while team member's focus is the leadership style such as transactional or transformational leadership styles.
