Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to make an analysis on the social impact of events. Events are very helpful for the society and the individual. The events have a huge impact on the environment, economy and society. These impacts can be either positive or negative. This paper emphasizes the social impact of events, and both the positive and negative points have discussed in this essay in order to analyze the impact of events on the society. The main focus of this paper is on the impact of events on the stakeholders.

Discussion

An event can have its definition as anything that gains the attraction of the audience and satisfy their tastes and likes. The main purpose of an event is to bring satisfaction and joy for the audience. An event can be very helpful in bringing the change for a society. An event can have distinct effects. It can be either the positive effects or the damaging effects. Events have their classifications as the small or mega events. The small events do not bring much impact on society and the economy (Allen, 2003, p. 27). On the other hand, there is a huge impact of the mega events in the society, environment and the economy of the country. This paper makes discussion on the impacts of events on the society.

Events are phenomena that punctuate, mark and identify collective and individual social realities (Long, 2008, p. 16). Such events have long played crucial roles in human society. Beginning in the last quarter of the 20th1 century, events have taken on additional functions as sites of tourism spectacle. This occurred largely because of the perception that spectacles would attract tourists and thus generate income. According to Andranovich (2001), the avid pursuit of events is the result of increasingly fierce competition between destinations, it is a common belief that cities and countries are using special events as unprecedented opportunities to serve a host of policy objectives — from delivering tourists, regenerating communities and celebrating moments in time to arousing civic pride, inspiring the arts, and stimulating regional/national economies (Andranovich, 2001, p. 113). A special event recognises a unique moment in time with ceremony and ritual to satisfy needs (Ap, 2000, p. 616). Andranovich (2001) offered a definition of special events by commenting that they are activities that occur outside the routine of an organisation or community. He stated:

“1). A special event is a one-time or infrequently occurring event outside the normal program or activities of the sponsoring or organising body.

2). To the customer or guest, a special event is an opportunity for leisure, social, or cultural experience outside the normal range of choices or beyond everyday experience” (Andranovich, 2001, p. 113).

Special events can be classified according to purpose and to the sector to which they belong (public, sporting, arts, festivals, etc.) (Ap, 2000, p. 616).
