A research in the aviation history indicates that the first major expansion of travelling by air was made in the 60s and 70s. The fast and low cost transportation was the main demand of that time. Italy, Spain and Greece were introduced as new holiday destinations. The wave of tourism had boomed the economies of the new destinations and created thousands of new jobs, which is necessary to meet the new demands and that was the big source of economic development. Looking at the current statistics of the British economy it is clear that the annual tourists travelling to Britain in 2007 were thirty-two million, equal to 2.7% of the GDP rate of the United Kingdom. Aviation industry has employed almost half a million direct work positions in the United Kingdom according to the official Heathrow website statistics. Airport usage apart from tourism purposes is widely used for leisure purposes as well; business often uses air travelling to connect with the rest of the world.

The yearly growth of business travelling is 3.5% in the last year. The major international airports such as Heathrow are operating at 99% of its capacity, therefore it require an immediate expansion in order to meet the new needs.
