What are the Leadership and Situational Factors Associated with Success for Project Managers?

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to leadership and situational factors associated with success for project managers. We know that situational leadership has been the prime charactertistics of any project's success. The situational approach to leadership asserts that there is no one best way to lead others and emphasizes that a leader's style and behavior should depend on the characteristics of his or her followers. Specifically, the situational approach to leadership model provides leaders with insight regarding the most effective leadership style to demonstrate based on the readiness of their followers. This research paper will be divided in five chapters. The chapter I will be the introduction of the paper. It will introduce the paper, its aims, purpose and ojectives. The second chapter of the paper is literature review. This chapter will discuss the literature relevant to the topic. The literature has been supported by scholarly sources. The third chapter of the paper will be the methodology part. It will discuss the methodology that will be carried on throughout the paper. The four chapter of the paper will be analysis and discussion while the fifth chapter of the paper will finally conclude all the material discussed in the paper.

1.1: Introduce Your Topic

Situational leadership model recognizes that there is no best leadership style. Any leadership style can be effective or ineffective depending on the task and behaviour relationships in any given situation. One area requiring further analysis for applying the model for military leadership is whether or not directed high task, low relationship authoritative leadership will always work. In a war time crisis situation, a soldier basic needs for survival may outweigh any emphasis a leader may place on the task relationships.

Effective leaders adapt their leader behavior to meet the needs of their followers and the particular environment. Learning to analyse a subordinate's readiness is really the key to the whole model. The key task of a manager is to match his leadership style to the readiness level of the subordinate. Readiness applies to a specific task, objective or goal. Ability is the knowledge, experience and skill that the task requires. The effective leader not only has to match the appropriate leadership style to the readiness level, he or she must check this match frequently and adjust the style as the relationship behaviour or readiness for a given task changes.
