Introduction

Health promotion is the methodology or a process to enable people to have control over the health related services for the improvement of the health. As these health promotion models have been enacted in developing countries, they can be a guideline for the developing countries to address their major health issues. Health promotion is not simply an initiative to be done by a designated organization. It is a collective exercise to be done by the people for the people, by individuals and as a group. Health promotion has revolutionized the health systems. The increases in the participation of the individuals have enabled the people to exert their control over the health determinants. As the participation of individuals has increased in health promotion, it has come forward as a powerful strategy for social change and development. It has also enabled people to raise their concern to reduce inequalities in health sector.

The other impacting aspect of health promotion has been creation of awareness of healthy lifestyle among masses. Now every individual has at least started to give healthy lifestyle a serious thought. Making healthy choices is becoming a rising trend among individuals these days. Health promotion not only just focuses upon medical health but also upon other factors such as anthropology, psychology, behavioral sciences, education, etc and their respective methodologies (Cadoret 2006, 34).

Health Promotion Theory

Health promotion theory is based on changing human behavior. Health promotion and health related programs are focused towards changing human behavior to live healthier lives. In order to achieve self actualization and well being, people need to change behavior towards a healthy lifestyle. Health promotion theory is based on the fact that people to adopt behaviors which they perceive will result in immediate benefits. Prior behavior has affected on future behavior, personal factors such as socioeconomic status affect healthcare choices, perceived benefits affects behavioral choices, interpersonal interaction affects health choices, situational choices and personal commitment to plan, all these factors affect health choice, according to health promotion theory. The model provides the basis for nurses systematically access client's health behavior. Then the model promotes nursing intervention, which can help people changing their behavior (Collins 2000, 9).

Health promotion is interlinked with the idea of delivering better healthcare options that are practical enough and attract the attention of the common man. Advanced Practice Nurses are Registered Nurses with specialty training at the master's-degree level, in primary care settings, such as the Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives and acute care of inpatients, such as the Clinical Nurse Specialists and in operating rooms, such as Nurse Anesthetists. This has opened a door in the nursing field. Nurses' roles are no longer limited. Nurses now have opportunities to advance their career and expand their roles. Advanced Practice Nurses can be more directly involved in patient care decisions and be more independent from the physician.
