Introduction

The optical communication is finally fully mature. She is now an effective alternative for long-range transmissions or medium range. It takes advantage of the properties of optical fiber transmission (greater bandwidth, increased immunity with regard to electromagnetic interference, advantages in terms of privacy and security, etc.). Improvements that are made in technology optical fiber transmission are such that the fiber-optic communication is no longer the privilege of the few large companies that transmit high data rates but also more importantly, the privilege of simple consumer (Sezerman, 1997, 67).

Optical Fibre

Before explaining directly that is optical fiber, it should highlight certain basic aspects of optics. Light moves to the speed of light in vacuum, however, when propagated by other means, the speed is lower. So when light passes to spread by some other means to propagate certain medium, its speed changes, and suffering reflection effects (light bounces off the change of medium, as the light reflected from the crystals) and refraction (light, and change the module speed, change direction of propagation, so we bent a spoon when it is in a glass of water, the direction from which light comes the part that is to air is not the same as it is into the water). This is seen best in the drawing that appears on our right (Hayes, 2005, 32).

Depending on the speed at which light is propagated in a medium or material, is given a refractive index "n", a number derived by dividing the speed of light in vacuum between the speed of light in said medium. The effects of reflection and refraction occurring at the boundary between two media depend on their refractive indices.

An optical fibre is a wire in glass or plastic fine which has the property to drive the light and is used in the transmission of land and ocean data. It provides a flow of information significantly higher than that of coaxial cables and supports a network of broadband through which can pass both the television, the telephone, the video conferencing and computer data.

Characteristics

Optical fibre is a dielectric waveguide that operates at optical frequencies. Each strand consists of a core of plastic or glass (silicon oxide and germanium) with a high refractive index, surrounded by a layer of similar material with a refractive index slightly lower. Optical fibre is more resistant coverage. The cover contains 25% more material than conventional covers.

It has dual use (interior and exterior): Resistance to water and ultraviolet emissions is another important characteristic of optical fibre. These fibres are characterized by high density packaging (Shimoji, 1999, 92).

Usage

The optical fibre through the performance benefits it provides is used increasingly in telecommunications networks. Optical fibre is a transmission medium usually employed in data networking.
