Summary

Firewall is a basic requirement for our organizations, offices and corporations, who use to deal the transferring the data by means of internet. Due to cyber crime the transferring of data, saving of data on servers is not so much save nowadays. Firewall is the positive step in favor of internet security or protects valuable information from outer unauthorized users. The purpose of this research paper is to discuss firewall, how it works, how it protects the access of an unauthorized user, types of the firewall available. Also, discuss the advantage and disadvantages, implementation, uses, strengths and weaknesses, management issues, necessary components for installation, terminology used for firewalls. It includes detail overview of Microsoft windows firewall, which is the basic default firewall comes with the operating system.

Information Technology

Microsoft Windows Firewall

Most of the organizations have the threat of external excesses. Microsoft windows firewall is the use to provide protection of external excess. In most of the organizations, the virtual backbone of their enterprise is internet, because it is use to connect the corporation to corporate networks, business partners, and customers. It also offers an economical and secure way to connect other branch offices, telecommunication, transferring of data to central servers.

Working

The protection of access of unauthorized user is possible by implementing firewall and control rules. Firewall works as a security system for controlling access to the restricted network. Therefore, every request from the external user has to pass through the firewall. A firewall is normally present at the point where the networks connect to the internet. On that location where firewall installed, this location allows the valid user only and protects the unauthorized users to get access (Scarfone, et al, 2009).

Firewall Types

There are two types of firewalls, software firewalls and hardware firewalls.

Software Firewalls

Nowadays operating system comes with built-in firewall software like Microsoft windows firewall, or the other firewalls software's are also available in the market.

Hardware Firewalls

These types of firewalls are normally routers with build-in Ethernet card along with hub. The computer access the web through this router.

Advantages of Firewalls

The most useful advantage of firewall is virus (malicious software) scanning has and Email scanning. Blocking of unwanted web content and provide privacy protection. NAT & PAT (Network/Port Address Translation) Virtual Private Networking IDS/IDP inclusion with law updates. Also, has an advantage of bandwidth management, flood/DoS control load balancing for scalability, redundancy, failover, and Port Forwarding and virtual hosting (Cohen, et al, 2005).

Disadvantages of Firewalls

If the intruder attacks at the central point and break through the firewall, they may get unlimited access to the network. They may control rights of the users from accessing essential services, for example, corporate consumer may not be able to use the Web, or when the user working away from home, may not have full access of the whole ...
