Evolving Approaches to Language and Gender Study

Evolving Approaches to Language and Gender Study

Introduction

The research on language and gender has been needed in delivering counters regarding the sociolinguistic variation connected with speaker's gender. One of the main themes widely conversed in gender and words research is concerning the difference in words between men and women. This school endeavour is an offer to counter the question: Do women and men discuss differently? I will thoroughly examine the suspect staring at the evidence which recommends women and men differ in words as well as check how it differs. I will also track down to investigate the encouraging factors which generate women and men articulate differently. I will include numerous bodily observations in regard to words exercise and gender, grounded on conversations I have participated in or overheardI will check gender as a sociolinguistic variable in speech behaviour.

Sociolinguistic Variations

Britain (2005) describes 'sociolinguistic variation' as “the examine of the way words varies and modifications in communities of speakers and concentrates in individual on the interaction of social factors and linguistic structures.” Language and gender research can be split into couple main categories. The first category is concerning the relationship between words and sexism, wherein the complete views towards both sexes becomes visible to reflect in words too. For case, numerous words types indicate towards the superiority of men and placement women negatively. However, in this school endeavour I will be concentrating on the second category which concentrates on the difference in words between men and women. In this fashion of research, couple main paddocks of words behaviour have been examined. Wodak (1997:1) points these out as “speech behaviour of men and women on the phonological crosswise and interactions (conversational styles) between women and men in discourse. As far as terminology is anxious, the category below dialogue will be 'gender' as defied to sex.

Discussion

Trudgill investigated numerous interesting differences between men and women. Nichols (1998:56) says that Trudgill found “women to exercise the standard-prestige - ing ending more commonly than men.” Overall, both studies had a regular result. Patrick (2005) says “holding constant other variables such as age and social group, women commonly arose to exercise types which closely resemble those of a yardstick or prestigious speech assortment more commonly than men, or in preference to the vernacular, non-standard or stigmatized types which men arose to favour.”In an offer to describe the movement of women speakers engaging yardstick prestige as defied to men, Nichols (1998:56) says “Labov and Trudgill have recommended that women are 'linguistically insecure'.”

Furthermore, Nichols (1998:56) says “Trudgill extends on this point by monitoring that women achieve relative standing in western societies more on the basis of how they facade than on what they do. Use of prestigious words might be supposed as one of women's limited method of achieving and gesturing relative standing, principally in more formal situations.”Although Labov and Trudgill's approach was practical in many ways, it had limitations. For case, the population were grouped into inflexible kinds without the debate ...
