Gladiator

Introduction

The historical film that I have opted to examine from a historical perspective is Gladiator. Gladiator is a historical art film , released in theaters on 1st may 2000. The film takes place in the year 180 AD, where the Legions of Marcus Aurelius is preparing to do battle with the German barbarians. This film is awarded 5 Oscars awards. Gladiator is the film based on the Roman Empire's most successful harvested from the legendary Ben-Hur. The film is set in Imperial Rome, starting at the end of the life of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, with his victory over the Marcomanni near Vindobona (AD 180), and follows how his son, Commodus, becomes the new emperor. Commodus marks the end of the High Empire and the Flavian dynasty, beginning the era of decadence known as Empire.

Discussion

Although Gladiator is one of few films set in the Roman Empire that has been very successful but this film does not give provide sources from which it is based, and if noticed and analyzed the characters of this film are do try to cover the real aspects but the story is too much based on fiction. The film is full of historical errors. These errors include entry into Rome for a land access rather than a road, the use of stirrups, printed leaflets as well as the fact that the real

Commodus reign lasted more than 10 years. And Lucile died before his brother.

Apart from this although there is evidence that the director placed great emphasis on the historical building as well as the architectural aspects. This shows that the historic character of the film does not care much to their creators. For the preparation of the shooting, Scott spent several months developing storyboards to create the structure of the plot. After six weeks of research, production has selected several sites belonging to the Roman Empire before its collapse, including Italy, France, North Africa and England. (Schwartz, Richard, 2001)

The film was shot in the three main sites from January to May in 1999 . It seems that the additional cost they have incurred its useless because if observed critically there are certain building shown in this film that contradict the historical theme on which the film was based on. Scott has used good visual effects that have covered up for a lot of scenes but if observed the scenes sequences are quiet different, even the reason behind it are altered.
