Globalization: Central America

Abstract

Recent developments in several countries in Central America caused a lot of handwringing about the growing threat of regional economic stability. While I share some of these problems, I think a lot of social tensions that have emerged are a consequence of a new, positive global paradigm that is emerging even though accompanied by pressures and challenges as the region moves towards full participation in the globalized economy. This change entails the opportunity to achieve a quantum leap in economic performance across the region, provided, however, that our society to prove its ability to consistently move forward with the modernization reforms in the economic and social fields.

Globalization: Central America

Globalization

Globalization has been described as one of the most contested issues in the social sciences (Guillen, 2001). This concept is a tough position and the strong emotions from both supporters and opponents. Strong feelings of opponents of globalization first irrupted on national television and in media in 1999 in Seattle, Washington, where thousands of protesters tried to close the meeting of the World Trade Organization (Almeida, Walter, 2006, p175-190).
