Graphics Organizers for Reading Comprehension

Introduction

To read different texts, different approaches and strategies of reading comprehension is required. To make reading an observable and active process can be useful for readers who struggle while reading. A strong reader has an interaction with the text for developing an understanding of the data in front of him. Some strategies of proficient readers are critiquing, analyzing, summarizing, inferring, connecting and predicting. There are many activities and resources, instructors and educators of reading which can be utilized with the strategies of reading comprehension regarding certain disciplines and content areas. Some examples of these strategies are summarizing, chunking, double-entry journals, anticipation guides, interactive reading and, talking to the text, note taking guides and graphic organizers.

Graphic organizers are productive and informative, device because they assist scholars coordinate details, ideas and other understanding components, for example, inferences, propositions and summaries. Graphic organizers can be utilized in topics, for example, research and communal investigations to advance understanding in these localities as well as reading. The educator should form the use of some organizers that are best matched for the understanding undertaking and direct their scholars while they perform applying what they have learned. Previous study investigations analyzing the consequences of graphic organizers on reading understanding for scholars with discovering disabilities (LD) are reviewed (Willerman & Mac, 1991).

One of the best ways to make a curriculum helpful for teachers and students is to introduce the graphic organizers in the classroom. There are many different varieties of the graphic organizers available and they have been researched widely for the effective improvement in the students learning outcomes.

Definition

“A graphic organizer is a graphic and visual display that depicts the relationships between terms, ideas, and facts or within a learning task. Graphic organizers are also sometimes referred to as concept diagrams, concept maps, advance organizers, cognitive organizers, knowledge, story maps or maps (Willerman & Mac, 1991).”

Visual Learning is defined as a method of teaching/learning and uses a set of graphic organizers (visual methods for ordering information) in order to help students by working with ideas and concepts, to think and learn more effectively. In addition, it can identify and visualize patterns and relationships in information, factors necessary for deep understanding and internalization of concepts. The importance of acquiring and using skills for the twenty-first century is now a major concern for schools that want to deliver quality education. This involves guiding the student to develop strategies that allow you to find, evaluate, interpret, organize and present information appropriately.
