Introduction

The National Institutes of Health, with an abbreviation of NIH, are government institutions of the United States engaged in the medical research and biomedical research. They depend on the Department of Health and Social Services of the United States. Their equivalent in France is the National Institute of Health and Medical Research. In 1887 was founded the Laboratory of Hygiene. After its expansion in the early twentieth century, it was reorganized in 1930 by Decree Ransdell in the National Institute of Health (one institute at that time). He underwent a second phase of substantial expansion after the Second World War to diversify into the twenty institutes that exist today.

The NIH is comprised of two parts, one called intra-mural funding and conducting specific research institute, the other extra-mural support research projects external to NIH in American universities. The main site is located at the NIH Bethesda in Maryland, with branches in Baltimore and Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. Their budget in 2006 was 28.6 billion dollars. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is one of the twenty seven components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), agencies and biomedical research federal government's conduct of the United States.
