Healthcare Reform Affect Elderly Population

Introduction

Today UK is the only industrial country in the world that no government sponsored health care system for all citizens. One of the main reasons for this is antinationalistic political philosophy, the values of which limited the government's actions in order to maximize personal freedom. Participation of the Government only saw some support for those most in need, children from poor and elderly - Medicaid (the poor) and Medicare (for elderly). Both grew out of controversy over the health of the population. Although these programs provide some level of assistance for the poor and elderly people (usually poor quality of services), there are an increasing number of low-wage working middle class people who do not meet the requirements for obtaining insurance Medicaid.

Discussion

Over the course of the next forty years, the portion of the population over age 65 will increase by slightly more than 100 per cent, from 11.5 per cent of the population to 23.5 per cent. To put this increase in context, it took roughly a century from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century to bring about an increase of similar magnitude in the portion of the population over 65. The health care cost of the nation is growing significantly and living longer. As the baby boom generation retires, Social Security is getting smaller and there isn't enough to go around. To show this situation, in 1960 there were five workers for every one social security recipient it dropped to three workers to ever one social security recipient. This just goes to show that many aren't receiving the money needed for a safe comfortable retirement. What if this retiree happens to get severely sick, they will not have money to afford the hospital bills or medication.

If the health care prices keep rising worker will not be able to retire happily. There will be a serious problem when retirees get ill and can't afford to go to the doctor. If this retiree has a retirement plan, it may not last as long as they live. Senior citizens are having a hard time affording to keep a roof over their head because of inflation. If this epidemic keeps getting worse the most important people, our elders, won't be able to live healthy and prosperous as they should. They are the people that pass down history from generation to generation, all other countries treasure, respect, and take most care for their retirees. Retirees aren't appreciated or helped out as much as they deserve. So government should have to implement alternatives to sort out this problem.
