As is the case with most short tales, feature development tends to be conveyed with activities and dialogue other than descriptions and anecdotes. Hills like White Elephants are no exception. Hills like White Elephants are a short story by Ernest Hemingway. This story takes location in a very short time span of time, but yet notifies a tale that is much larger than itself. Even a dialogue can state a large deal about the persons involved.

The setting of this story is a bar at a train position in Spain. The time span is not ever specifically asserted but it can be presumed to be round 1927, as that is the designated day the story was written (Johnston 233-38). It happens while they are having beverages at the bar. Although the theme is not ever apparently asserted, it is equitably clear that the consideration is on abortion for the girl. This is clear from the man's declaration that "it's to let the air in" as well as the rudimentary gravity of the conversation. The dialogue makes up the most of the story, other than some general facts on the environment. There is a third feature, the server, but she is a secondary figure. Overall, not anything is apparently or conspicuously asserted in the conversation. The huge most of what is going on is left to the book reader to surmise, which is what makes the story so elegant.

There is very mighty imagery in Hills like White Elephants. This is conveyed both in the name and the dialogue. The hills in Spain make the young female believe of white elephants. A white elephant is a metaphor for a costly ownership that is an economic problem to maintain. This sign began in Thailand, where albino (white) elephants were advised sacred, and were not allowed to be compelled into work. Therefore, a white elephant was only a problem to its proprietor, consuming nourishment without supplying any helpful service to its owner. A white elephant might be a privilege to own and satisfying to gaze at, but in having it you could become destitute.
