Homelessness

Introduction

This paper introduces the differences in the contribution in homelessness of different groups of people. Different surveys conducted to analyze the state of homelessness in the United States have shown that there are some specific groups subjected to more homelessness than others. Therefore, there are various factors like poverty, inequality, availability of benefit and support programs, racial discrimination of minorities and medical problems that led up to this change in of homelessness among different groups of people in the US. This paper will identify the causes of discrimination in addressing the social benefits to the most deserving ones by generating an argument on racism and social exclusion.

There are two main groups of people that contribute the highest proportion of homeless people in the US, people having mental health care issues and racial minorities. Social discrimination is the basis of developing the factors which in the end results in homelessness. Social incarceration, housing, wealth, income and social exclusion all depend on racial segregation which in turn results in homelessness. Among the factors that cause homelessness, social exclusion and poverty contributes the highest.

According the State of Homelessness in America 2012 published by Homelessness Research Institute (HRI), a household survey was conducted in which it was found that, there are three main types of homelessness in the US which are times when people live with their friends or relatives, times when they live in special accommodations for homeless people and times when they live in emergency accommodations (US Department of Labor, 2008). However, it is also stated that the perfect study must include interviews and surveys of people who are homeless, in mental hospitals and in prison who make up a rugged proportion of homeless people.
