Chapter 1: History of Publications

Introduction

As my graphic design practice is driven by publication design, the research and development delivered in this dissertation will help me understand how I can help drive my practice using new media technology. My line of enquiry will focus on the history of publications and how designers can embrace new technologies, as well as the value of handmade publications.

Aim

The aim for my investigation is to develop a greater understanding of how designers can embrace technology and add value to publications viewed online or on other media such as the Apple Ipad. This will inform and form the basis of a new insight to how I can add greater value to my design within new technology.

Objectives

1. Identify and define a list of new technology, which is having an impact on the way people see publications today.

2. Create informed body of research that is focused on the history of publications.

3. Perform a literature review on research.

4. Define research criteria and construct research plan, including possible case studies / interviews.

5. Conduct primary research, interviewing relevant designers in the design industry.

6. Interpret and analyse findings. Further research if required

7. Evaluation of outcomes

8. To learn from the investigation of the essay to give me greater gain as a graphic designer using new technology day to day.

Research Question

The following research question was included in this research:
