The term Virtual Environment applies to computer-simulated environments. In the real world they stimulate the presence which is physical. It is also for the imaginary worlds. In remote communication environment there is a virtual presence of the users. The concept of this is about telepresence and virtual artifact (VA). This occurs through the use of input devices like mouse and keyboard. Multimode devices can also be used like wired gloves, omnidirectional treadmills and the polhemus.

The stimulated environments are very much similar to the real world to develop natural experience. The example of natural experience is combat training for pilot. It can also differ from reality like VR games. It is not easy to develop good quality experience of real life. The reason behind its difficulty is the technical limitation which occurs while processing power, communication bandwidth and image resolution. With the passage of time these components of technologies will achieve their goals as processor, data communication and imaging will become cost effective and strong.

Virtual environment is also used to describe other applications like highly visual, 3D environment and immersive. The notion has become popular with the help of CAD software, head mounted displays, graphics, gloves and miniaturization.

Many businesses are doing their business in virtual environment and gaining benefits of it. The first benefit is that it reduces the expenses for real estates. The example of this is IBM who has applied virtual environment in their workplace and has reduce their cost of real estate. IBM has almost saved its cost by transferring offices into virtual work place and has kept only those offices which need the physical work place.

It has also been observed that productivity increase by apply virtual environment at workplaces. The productivity of IBM also increased from 40% in the teleworking department. This department works virtually. The reason behind increasing the productivity is that virtual environment must be applied to only such departments which need them or are best suited for them. Teleworking is one of the departments for which the virtual environments are designed so it best suits for it.

Another reason for applying virtual environment at workplace is that it increases the profits. It is studied that those companies who applied virtual workplace in sales department has increased their profits.
