Introduction

3D technology is increasingly penetrating virtually all spheres of civilization from the stereo images to scientific research. This three-dimensional visualization involves the use of modern graphics hardware to present spatial data in three dimensions and allow the user to interact with the data in real time. When applied to geographic applications, this enables the user to view map data that include height information in a more intuitive and comprehensible form, rather than using a projection of those data onto a 2D plane. Discussion

Ever since the re-introduction to 3-D technology, the Film Industry has seen a huge increase in revenue for production companies and theaters alike. The huge success of this technology has caused other markets as Television and Computer companies hurrying to bring out 3-D versions of their products. On behalf of the huge increase in revenue for production, 3-D technology is continuing to do great for films, with most big budget and family films including a 3-D version. Perhaps the most elaborate virtual environment is the virtual world, which emphasizes participant immersion and community engagement. Thanks to improving computer technologies (particularly in gaming), and to the development of social networking and 3D technologies, 21st-century virtual worlds are fully contained immersive environments in which participants not only imagine their involvement but are actually involved. Modern virtual worlds contain communities of people who interact in settings that are networked, persistent, synchronous, immersive, and, above all, 3D. Participants enter these worlds as extensions of, or alternatives to, the real worlds that they inhabit and the real lives that they lead (Ray Zone, pp.44).

So far 3-D is continuing to do great for films, with most big budget and family films including a 3-D version. But as we can see with the Television market, it is hard to be relevant, and the need to outdo their competitors is helping the technology by bringing out such innovations like T.V. sets that do not need glasses to work. The Film Industry would need to come up with similar innovations for 3-D to last in theaters. Unfortunately, such innovations like creating movie screens that would not require glasses would be very expensive for theaters to upgrade to and they may not be able to take on the expense.
