IntroductionProfile of the special education student

Inclusive education calls for systematic changes in the educational system. Traditionally, children with special needs have been pulled out or removed from the regular education mainstream and given specialized but separate services until they could earn their way back into the regular classroom. This separatist attitude has resulted in lower teacher expectations of special education students, which has resulted in poor self esteem, limited academic gains, restricted socialization, and minimal involvement in the employment sector.

Today, with inclusive practices the norm, the majority of special education students will receive services in the regular education classroom. Thus, the expectations of general education students have changed dramatically. This added responsibility comes with mixed emotions from teachers, parents, and students.To understand schools today, is to look at students who have unusual needs and who challenge teachers to the limits of commitments, insights and skills. One often finds for these students, alienation, segregation, rejection, and often many highly reluctant learners. These students are, for whatever reasons, struggling in their academic programs or in their social behavior; they are often at risk in their private lives and live in disordered communities. In today's classrooms we also refer to students who are learning and adjusting to school life especially well, but receive far too little help; like other students, they need instruction that is adapted to their strengths.Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to assess teacher attitudes of the placement of special education students in regular classrooms. This is vital to providing teachers the support and training services necessary to enable them to meet the challenges and demands of the classroom today.
