Humanities : Art Movements

Introduction

The comprehensive and intricate particulars that seem to be weaved right through the centuries in art are impractical in their approach to endeavor sectional differences. The vast majority of the focal point throughout history has been on the anatomical form of human beings, and none of the art movements have gone further in exploring the humanistic figure then realism and romanticism. These two art movements will be featured in this paper, as I attempt to realize their distinctive characteristics and socio-economic conditions that affected these styles. Art is widely known as the first written form of communication and to scholars, to study the origins and the makings of art is to delve into the history of civilizations and humanity itself. Religion is an important part of both these movements, and that is clearly portrayed in paintings by artists in either movement. However, there is a distinct lack of n Romanticism, wherein the paintings are considered somewhat vagueas compared to Realism where the character of the painting is given special attendance. The concept of idealization is explored thoroughly in romanticism, which is reflected in the works discussed in this paper as well. In Realism however, the reality of the situation is shown in all its glory. Scholars and art instructors have often regarded the subject of Romanticism paintings as having a variety of voices. Its heterogenous character is distinctive to itself and sets it apart, whereas Realism uses a very strict homogenous theme regardlessof whether a painting is being discussed or a novel. In the Romanticism painting discussed in this paper, the story is largely told through the little hidden symbols in different corners of the painting. The analyst must scour the painting and its subject;s body language, facial expressions, surrounding area, objects scattered around the subject and so on, to get a picture of what the topic is. Even then, there is certain vagueness to the result of the analysis. In Realism, the painting's subject is clearly apparent and does not need a retelling through interpretation of symbols and deep analysis. As the paintings used to be commissioned by rulers of the day, there are definite royal touches found in both romanticism and realism, Romanticism especially tries to use religion in its subject matter, no matter how frivolous and insignificant the painting seems to be to the normal viewer. This, and other subtle similarities and differences are analysed throughout this paper.

Discussion

Realism is known to have arisen in the second half of the 19th century, during 1830 to 1870. It enjoyed a short stint, but left a deep impact on the minds of artists everywhere, as well as a legacy that is regarded as one of the most vivid and inspiring. In the short period of time that it enjoyed fame however, the principles of realism sealed themselves as a way of thought more then an art movement, as it uses a way to express an object or a particular scenery in its raw beauty, removing ...
