Role of Professional Nursing Organizations in Maintaining a Healthy Workplace

A healthy work environment is important for the overall nursing profession, to retain valuable nurses, and improve patient care and outcomes. By definition, a healthy work environment is “a work setting in which policies, procedures, and systems are designed so that employees are able to meet organizational objectives and achieve personal satisfaction in their work.” (Shirey, 2006) The implementation of effective communication is an example to maintain a healthy nursing environment. wholesome work environments are healing, empowering environments that have been correlated with worker engagement and organizational commitment. These environments are distinuished by a high level of trust between administration and workers; by workers who heal each other in a respectful manner; by an organizational heritage that supports accomplished communication and collaboration; and by a weather in which workers feel emotionally and physically protected (Shirey, 2006). (Alspach 2009)

A healthy work environment is important to the overall nursing profession, to retain valuable nurses and improve patient care and outcomes. Parse ((Shirey, 2006). Sees professional nurses as being on a journey to becoming skilled communicators (Walker, 1996). On this journey, nurses interact with the environment and patient to create a sense of trust to impact patient care. Nurses have the option to choose different methods of relating to their peers and are responsible for their actions. Many work environments are considered to be unhealthy and nurses are transitioning out of nursing in to less demanding professions paths. The American doctors Association (ANA) cipher of Ethics (ANA 2001) that states expert doctors have an ethical mandate to become accomplished communicators. As nurses embrace this concept they will need to focus on what needs to be done, rather than what is being done to positively affect their nursing environment. Nurses engage in conversations every day that prepare them to be effective communicators, to build meaningful relationships that will allow them to positively impact patient care. Parse's Theory of Human Being (2001) is used to improve communication among nursing profession we will focus on two becoming an effective communicator.

Literature Review
