Emily's Dickinson's “I heard a Fly Buzz When I Died” focuses on the narrator's inconsequential death by permitting the key issue of the verse to be the fly. Throughout the verse there is a a fly buzz “buzzing” through the room which is diverting the narrator from going into into their afterlife, if this is paradise or torment it is uncertain. Throughout the verse Dickinson envisages that she has past away and recounts the view and the instant of death. She does this by recounting the calm in the room, the weeping assistants, the executioner of her will, the limitation of her wind, and eventually, her anticipation of Christ [the King]. This is usual of Emily Dickinson because most of her verse agreements with topics of death and immortality (Robert DiYanni, 2006).

Analysis

The starting of the verse starts with, “I heard a a fly buzz when I died”. The a fly buzz in everyday life is not a greeting creature; they are generally glimpsed round decaying or dead objects. In this verse the decaying or staining object is the narrator's body. The second line of the first stanza comprises a metaphor about the calm of room in evaluation to the calm of a storm. The room is absolutely quiet, much like the lull between the “heaves” of a large storm. The lull is a instant of anticipation and waiting. Everyone understands what is to pursue, the inquiry is just when it will creep up on us. The narrator's visitors are all patiently observing over her deathbed absolutely quiet, and the only sound is of a a fly buzz, buzzing in the air. . Dr. Jhan Hochman, who has a doctorate in English, disagrees in his attitude saying,”…the calm between gales might mention to the still instant of staining between the gale of life (earth) and the hauling gale of death (heaven)” (Robert DiYanni, 2006).
