Thesis Statement

This research will focus on the need of lowering the drinking age to 18, because drinking has always been viewed as a "forbidden fruit” as well as a "symbol of rising against authority" but at the age of 21 one is considered an adult and must be given all the adult privileges along with the right to drink.


The legal age announced to be 18 is far away from the solution of a problem for the under-age drinkers. It has forced the youngsters from the age between eighteen and twenty to consume alcohol without any supervision and illegally. Rather than saving lives of people, it is putting their lives in dangers, as the youngsters do not have any chance of learning about the drinking responsibilities. (Debra, 2007, 66-87)

Everyone have the idea about the dangers and risks possessed by excessive drinking which includes the risk of increased injuries, fights and car accidents. According to a recent study, there is an increase in the risk factor for young adults. Alcohol extensively weakening the overall functioning of brain in youngsters, specifically the cognitive functions such as learning, decision-making, spatial skills and memory, and these get even worse with increased heavy consumption of drinking.

Another research have suggested that the alcohol has more adverse effects on teenage brains, highly injuring them more than it does to the brain of adults. It also states that a heavy consumption at an early age might undermine the neurological capacities that are required to protect one from falling for alcoholism. Here is advisable to allow the youngsters above the age of eighteen to enter in the pubs and bar clubs. Ever since the drinking age was set at 21, there has been controversy. Many Americans accept as factual that if a juvenile individual is mature enough to risk their life keeping protected their homeland at age 18, then they are mature enough to drink alcohol (Smith, 32). The national law on the minimum legal age for alcohol consumption was declared on July 17, 1984 by the United States Congress as a system for all states who want to legislate and amend the minimum age for consumption and possession of alcoholic alcohol from age 21.

Under the Act, federal highway aid, a state may not enforce the minimum age if it were subject to a 10% decrease in its annual federal highway. While this law does not prohibit the consumption of alcohol to those under 21 years, some states extended its provisions within a declared prohibition. Meanwhile, many states continued to allow alcohol to minors in some circumstances. In other states do not set up the restriction and private consumption in others consumption was only allowed in specific locations in the presence, consent and supervision of family or religious occasions.
