Infant Cognitive Development



Abstract

This research is based on identifying the cognitive development process in the infants. For this purpose, different past researches have been thoroughly studied, that what the scientists had to say about this topic. This research is more focused on the theory of Jean Piaget, as he was the first scientist who brought this theory into existence.

This research studies different stages that are involved in the infant's life, along with their developmental process. This research also highlights how the infants develop skills of communication, and memory building. Furthermore, it also points out the importance of parents and caregivers in the cognitive development phase of the infants.

Infant Cognitive Development

Introduction

Cognitive development is one of the theories of psychology that focuses on development of children in terms of information processing, language learning, perceptual and conceptual skill building, and other parts of brain development. The research on this theory has been started since Jean Piaget first coined the term of Cognitive Development. Many researches have been conducted in this regard to identify the learning behavior of the infants.

After the new baby is born, the two years of the child remain very critical in terms of their learning process. Parents play a significant role in this learning process of their children. This learning stage can then help children develop different skills before entering into the schooling stage of their life. Parents need to nurture their child, and try to interact with their child as much as they can (Piaget, 1972).

Each individual in this earth is different from the other; this is the fact that is commonly acknowledged by all the scientists and researchers. Same is the case with new born babies. Neither is they born with the same physical attributes, nor with the same cognitive and emotional abilities. These skills differ from children to children. They also differ in how quickly they learn the things. Some new born babies are very quick learners; others remain bit slow learners. Some remain always smiling and happier while others remain unpleasant. Some remain very active all time while others act opposite to it. Their interaction and response to certain actions also vary (Piaget, 1990).

Child Development

Child development is a process which involves the growth of the child from the time they born to the time they become adolescence. This process includes the three different developmental areas in the child; physical development, emotional development, and the cognitive development (Greenspan, 1997). Since, my research is solely based on the cognitive development, so I will skip over from the other two developmental processes of the child.

Cognitive Development

This term is defined as an intellectual growth of the infants from the time they born to the time of their adulthood. The infants thinking and learning process starts from the time they are born.
