Use of Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets on Prevention of Malaria in Children in Nigeria

Introduction

The study is related to the use of Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets for prevention from malaria which particularly focuses on the in Children of Nigeria. Malaria is one of the main causes of child mortality in Nigeria. The disease is through the distribution of insecticide-treated nets can be significantly reduced. Therefore, the northern Nigerian states of Kaduna and Kano four hospitals and numerous villages with the cargo nets. Use of Insecticide-Treated Nets as a Strategy for the Prevention of Malaria in Nigeria

The use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) is one of the strategies currently recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the prevention and control of Malaria in the World (Howard, Omumbo, Nevill, Some, Donnelly , Snow, 2000).

The use of bed nets as a form of protection against different kinds of insects and as a means of preserving the privacy VI century BC. Mosquito nets, curtains and clothes impregnated with insecticides were used during World War II to protect against malaria and other vector-borne diseases, however, it was not until the middle of the decade of the 80's when its use began to spread as a strategy for malaria control, mainly in Africa. ITNs not only act as a barrier to prevent mosquito bites, but also as an insecticide repellent, annihilating inhibitor or vector, and in Peru as a measure of protection to vampire bites, which can prevent the transmission of wildlife rabies in rural communities. Thus, ITNs provide protection both individuals as refugees under its protection to other members of the community.

Research based on randomized trials conducted in Africa showed that the proper use of ITNs decreased by one fifth of deaths among children under five years. Moreover, the incidence of clinical episodes of Plasmodium falciparum infection due to decreased by 50%. Other authors show also effective in reducing anemia during pregnancy, placental infection and low birth weight . The impact of ITNs extends to people who do not use mosquito nets. The protection afforded by non-users is difficult to quantify, but appears to extend several hundred meters. Studies show a reduction in the prevalence of malaria in the long term through use of ITNs, show that this effect is achieved only if the nets are portrayed regularly. Publications that compare costs between MTI and spraying of insecticides (RI) in endemic areas are favorable to the ...
