Power Relations and Institutional Structures Impact Interaction

Ian Hutchby and Robin Wooffitt (2008) pertain that conversation analysis (CA) looks to disclose how interactants “understand and respond to one another in their turns at talk” (Berger, 1985, p.12), however, their view is that each turn or action is done primarily as a consequence of the previous interactants interaction.

The conversation analysis of power relations and institutional structures in various disciplines has created an extensive literature. Most of this work is carried out within the limits of sociology and political science. It will not be our task in this review or summary of this rich tradition. Therefore, we selected several important properties of social power and rebuild it within our own theoretical framework. It should be understood, though, that in our opinion, the complex notion of power is not only counted on a single definition. A full, interdisciplinary theory is needed to capture their most significant consequences and applications. (Berger, 1985, pp: 112)
