isearch paper: Photography

Introduction

The topic of my isearch paper is photography. I have a personal connection with photography as it is my hobby and passion too. For me photography is magic. Photography can be creative or just illustrative. Illustrative photography means that the photo depends on the text and its description to describe it. This photograph doesn't hold its own view, perception or attraction to the viewer. “The point is not that a picture is worth a thousand words, but that it can be understood in a thousand languages photography is inextricably interwoven into human life. Photographs are all around us, we see them everywhere and so is the process of picture taking, or more seriously 'picture-making' as stated by Ansel Adams (Gray 1995), a very influential environmental photographer of our time.

My view on Photography

Photography has greatly influenced the world, from the telescopic images of the far reaches of the universe to the microscopic images of nature and its minute intricacies. Photography has vividly exposed the beauty and realities of our surroundings. It can capture meaningful moments or lifestyles and communicate highly complicated realities such as medical diagnosis or forensic evidence. Photography is also valued and admired by many from the fact that anyone can pick up a camera and create an image that meets his or her original vision and then sharing and communicating that vision with others.

Photography has the capacity of immediacy and honesty of presentation, as the saying goes, the camera never lies. It has the power to enhance the viewer's understanding of situations, subjects, or objects and influence opinions. A photograph can disclose almost all human emotions, even the most complicated quite immediately. As a result, despite the power of the written word, it still holds true that photographs dominate international communication. They have been used to cause change, as the cutting edge in influencing global politics, bringing action against famine and saving victims of natural catastrophes, revealing abuses in strife-torn areas, and promoting conservation and preservation initiatives, among its many other uses.

Documentary photography has varied definitions as it is used to describe anything from photographing people or events and also applicable to day-to-day photojournalistic images in the newspapers. The denominator is that it is a photographic document to communicate a true record of real people, events, places, and situations that come across to the viewer without any form of manipulations or exaggerations. Ang (2005) argues that for it to qualify as a form of documentary photography, the body of work is not of a single image but a multiple collection of images narrating a story, taking some time to complete, and motivated by an idea or ideology.
