PESTEL, Trend Surfing and Design Practice

As I have gone through the workshop, I have felt that that there are different factors affecting the design practise. As a consequence of the rapid development of information and computer technology, the cost for personal computers and peripheral equipment has been decreasing. Thus, many people have the opportunity to use a personal computer to work on image and video editing, interactive multimedia design, webpage design, HTML programming, and e-business. I came to know that some areas in graphic communications are more and more popular, and the enrolments of some graphic communications programs have accelerated in the last decade. I also came to understand that the number of students enrolled in the Commercial Graphics and Graphic Communications Management programs at Pittsburg State University (PSU), Pittsburg, Kansas has grown significantly. In 1997, PSU's records showed 170 students were enrolled in the programs. It is becoming increasingly important to understand and apply design thinking and practices in a broad range of activities in industries/institutions. An exposure to empathetic user understanding methods and collective idea generation tools is expected to help you to come up with innovative practices in your industry/institution (Wallner, 2007, p. 98).

This workshop has made me realized that the UK is perceived to have a strong design industry, and a strong academic Design research field, that can make a significant contribution to Government policy goals around improving UK competitiveness, business performance and public sector efficiency. There is a need for robust evidence of the contribution of design to the economy and its change over time, and of the links between academic design research and professional design practice. In addition, there is a need for knowledge about the UK design industry, examples of effective and efficient design practice and issues or barriers to a strong and sustainable design industry. Design Council and AHRC believe that design plays a key role in economic and social value creation (Wallner, 2007, p. 98). Design is key to connecting R&D efforts with innovation, enabling the market implementation of new knowledge that is fundamental to delivering economic growth and contributing to social renewal. The Government's recently published Innovation & Research Strategy placed design at the heart of innovation and economic growth, and the significance of design in the built environment has been reflected in the National Planning Policy Framework and Housing Strategy. The AHRC's Delivery Plan for 2011-15 highlights support for research in design as one of its strategic priorities. In order to promote the use of design, to explore new directions for academic design research and its engagement with business, and to maximise the contribution that design can make to the economy and society, we believe that a more sophisticated understanding is needed of the use and value of design and the current state of design research and business ...
