Biography of the Authors

Thomas Mann

Thomas Mann was one of the great experimental novelists of the first half of the 20th century. Writing in German, Mann contributed a lengthy list of monumental works, including Buddenbrooks, The Magic Mountain, Death in Venice, Doctor Faustus, and Confessions of Felix Krull. While at university, Mann immersed himself in the writings of Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, two very influential German philosophers and cultural critics. Mann's early literary influences were Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, whose psychological realism Mann particularly admired (Mann, 2012).

In 1929, Mann won the Nobel Prize in literature. When Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, Mann, along with his family, moved to Switzerland, where Mann worked as an editor for various literary journals. In 1938, Mann moved to the United States, working as a visiting professor at Princeton University. While at Princeton, Mann completed several critical works, including a study of Dostoevsky. Mann eventually moved to California but left the United States in 1952, bitterly disappointed by the persecution of communists and communist sympathizers by the U.S. government. Mann received numerous honorary doctorates from both European and American universities (the University of Bonn restored Mann's honorary doctorate in 1947). He died on August 12, 1955, in Zurich at the age of 80, leaving a rich literary legacy of novels reflective of the intellectual and historic struggles of Europe in the 20th century.
