Introduction

Culture is a context of human heritage. It is defined as “the collection of human values, norms, rituals, and phenomena of life pertaining to a regional and geographical entity and its people”. Culture is a context, pertaining to human heritage. Culture is a geographical context that pertains to a particular entity of people. It is further described as “the set of beliefs, behaviours, objects, and other characteristics common to the member of a group of people or a society”. It is an extremely important term in context of human civilization, human history and existence. It signifies the direction of human conduct, and the prevalence of human conduct (Kozleski & Zion, 2005).

Society is a much broader concept. It is defined as “a group of inhabitants related to each other through persistent or a social grouping sharing the same geographical and virtual territory, with same political authority and cultural values”. The individuals pertaining to same society and sharing strong societal bonds are tied in one culture. A society is a collaborative network of human ties that branch out from existence of similar history, values and societal outlook resulting in oneness and integration of human heritage for generations to come.

Culture and society are two inter-woven concepts. Society is the social interaction of people sharing a common culture. Culture emerges from a society, and society is based on sharing of same culture. Therefore, culture is an entity of a society, whereas, society operates in the domain of culture. They are co-existent and interdependent patterns of human origination and survival (Janke, 1993).

Japan is one the most ancient civilization in the evolution of earth, as well as, one of the few unique cultures of the planet. The culture of Japan has been undergoing through the phases of emergence and evolution. The country is one the richest and fastest growing economies of the world, yet it has one of the most ancient cultural heritage on the blue planet. The society of Japan believes in human values and progressive culture, however, the cultural aspects are deeply integrated in the living style of the people. The paper discusses the concept of culture and society, as well as, their sociological significance. The paper also describes the characteristics of Japanese society and features of Japanese culture. It describes the historical evolution of Japanese society, as well as, the development of Japanese culture that is based on human progress and integration of Japanese history.
