Beowulf

"Beowulf" is an Anglo-Saxon epic heroic poem, which takes place in Scandinavia to the deportation of Angles in Britain. With its 3,182 verses, it represents the single most important preserved work of Anglo-Saxon language. The society described in the poem emphasizes honor, courage and bravery; fighters are highly regarded and reach important positions. The king, who holds the position of protector of his country expected the military service of his men, they are rewarded for their efforts by him with weapons, valuables and estates (Anonymous, pp. 46). In addition, the individual is seen under the influence of a powerful destiny. Beowulf is about the conflict with the attitude that not he but the fate will ultimately decide the outcome, one in Norse warrior tradition deeply rooted belief. Beowulf is a mighty warrior who travels to Denmark to rid court of King Hrothgar of a terrible man-eating monster named Grendel. After defeating Grendel, Beowulf also kills Grendel's mother, and then returns to the land of the Goths to be at the service of his people and his king, Hygelac. There are various reasons why Beowulf is known as the ideal epic hero. According to the poem, there are several characteristics of an epic hero such as courage, bravery, lack of greed etc. Beowulf has all of these characteristics while he battles Grendal and his mother as well as the dragon, his courage and bravery are demonstrated. Haring of the dragon's treasures with others instead of keeping it for himself demonstrates Beowulf's lack of greed. These same qualities are also possessed by Odysseus (Stutt, pp. 5). The strength, courage, nobility of Odysseus is portrayed in throughout the book. These qualities are also seen in the Iliad as well.

The various qualities and characteristics of an epic hero presented in the book. The epic hero is not merely a warrior but is an effective leader as well. An epic hero is also a polished and skilled speaker who can address the masses with confidence and eloquence. He also possesses distinct powers and strengths. The epic hero usually have to go through a journey in which his courage, strength and endurance is tested. The concept of arete (Greek for "bringing virtue to perfection") is crucial to understanding the epic protagonist.
