Introduction

Kohl's company is one of the biggest discount department store chains in the joined States, with more than 730 outlets located in 41 states. Targeting middle-income shoppers buying for their families and homes, the chain sustains reduced retail prices through a reduced cost structure, restricted staffing, and progressive management data schemes, as well as the economical submission of centralized buying, circulation, and advertising. This "Kohl's concept" has proven thriving in both little and large markets, and in narrow piece buying hubs, regional buying centres, and freestanding venues. History

Kohrs was established in 1962. Later in 1978, the company was acquired by Batus Retail, a subsidiary of British-American Tobacco. While owned by Batus, Kohls expanded from 10 to 39 stores throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana.

In 1986, Kohls was purchased by a group of investors led by Kohls senior management. Kohls expanded its store base to 66 stores through the acquisition of 26 Main Street Stores in 1988. This expansion led to the companys initial public offering in 1992. In 1 990s, Kohls expanded its operations by opening over 100 new stores across the US.

Kohls opened 60 stores in 2000. Kohls ventured into the Southeast region of the US by opening brand-new stores in Atlanta in 2001 . Also, the company expanded its operations in the South Central region of the US with stores in Oklahoma City, Austin, Fayetteville and El Paso. In the same year, Kohls also opened its fifth distribution center in Corsicana, Texas.

Kohls opened stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island for the first time in 2002. The company opened 75 stores during the year.

The company opened its eighth distribution center in San Bernardino, California and opened three new stores in the San Antonio area, in 2003. Further in the year, Kohls opened stores in California. The company entered an alliance with Estee Lauder to create a new cosmetics department in its department stores. By an agreement with Nickelodeon Consumer Products in 2003, the company became the exclusive retailer for the launch of a new line of clothing under the everGirl brand.

Kohls opened 95 stores including five new markets in California, in 2004. By the end of 2004, Kohls expanded its operations to 40 states through 637 stores. In the same year, Kohls broadened its products portfolio with the introduction of several new exclusive, private and national brands, like daisy fuentes, Oh Baby! by Motherhood and Laura Ashley Lifestyles.

In 2005, Kohls opened 95 new stores including its first locations in Florida. Also, Kohls expands its mens offerings with the introduction of Chaps. Kohls completed the sale of its proprietary credit card business to JP Morgan Chase in 2006.
