South Korea's later annals are assessed by alternating time span of popular and autocratic rule. Civilian authorities are conventionally enumerated from the First Republic of Syngman Rhee to the up to designated day Sixth Republic. The First Republic, arguably popular at its inception, became progressively autocratic until its disintegrate in 1960. The Second Republic was powerfully popular, but was overthrown in less than a year and restored by an autocratic infantry regime.
