Introduction

The Family Literacy program provides all five components of the Even Start model: adult education, parent education, early childhood education, Parent and Child Together activities (PACT), and home visiting. We collaborate mainly with Head Start, located in the same building, and with the School District of Lancaster, but we also serve parents and children throughout Lancaster County (Black, 1998, 33).

Profile 1

Maria is a 17 years old girl who lives in North Carolina. She is currently doing the childcare course has 5 GSCSE Grade d-e. She has very poor self image of herself. She thinks that she has lack of confidence and has no social skills at all. She finds that she has ugly literacy skills; therefore not good at learning. She thinks that her lessons are boring because she feels that she is not learning much due to her poor skills. In addition to that, all the teachers do is use power points and gets them to write a note which is deemed another problem for her. She lives alone with her father.

Profile 2

Mary is 17 years old girl who lives in California. She hates studying and thinks it is pointless and is only coming to college because her parents forced her too. She feels that she does not learn anything because the lessons are extremely boring. She hated school secondary school because got picked on because she cam from Pakistan. Her family said that she could only do a childcare course because there would be only girls on the course. Her social skills are poor and Lacking skills and finds it difficult to spell and can get easily withdrawn if she is not finding interesting

Subject content of the learning outcomes

Almost every time a new student walks through the door and sits down to talk with me about why they came, s / almost always says, "I want to get my GED." After we get to know a little bit and I ask if s / he has any questions, the answer is almost always the same: "How long does it take to get my GED?" While I realize that it is almost impossible to give a specific answer at that time, and while I do everything possible to explain why, that question always makes me shake a little, because I know that not once have I made a formal assessment and reached to know the students much better, not being necessarily be able to give a definitive answer to that question.

The thing is I'm still learning how to measure where students are actually willing to take the plunge.
