Learning and the Senses

The learning professionals call them modalities. We probably call them senses. They are the five widespread senses with which we experience our world. The ways in which the senses are associated to our short and long term recollections constitute our natural learning modalities. This article will clarify how modalities are the pathways for learning; then it will help we identify your preferred modalities and finally it will give we concrete ways to learn faster by using your modalities consciously. (Brooks 1995)

Modality usually refers to our hard wiring: how our nervous scheme brings data in, links that data to what we already understand and allows us to convey the understand ledge out and use it. The visual modality mentions to what we glimpse and images we remember. Auditory mentions to what we hear: how things sound. Kinesthetic refers to knowing through feel or by doing. Olfactory indicates stink (our most acute and smallest used sense).

As infants, we are all attractive much kinesthetic/gustatory; we learn by putting things in our mouth. This being viciously disappointed by mature persons we rapidly learn to discover through our eyes and ears. We put less faith in our sentiments or the tastes left in our mouths as ways of learning or judging.

We'll know we're visual if we need pictures to understand ideas and concepts. Visual persons believe in pictures. They are expected to escort their talk with visuals. They may talk very quick and use phrases like “picture”, “see”, “glimpse”, “shape”, “looks” etc. If we're a visual, we'll do well to look for and create pictures, charts, maps, diagrams. Color sections in your texts. Take notes in distinct colors. Use collages, decorating and drawing to study. To review, close your eyes and see what we remember. (Knowles 1978)

The auditory folk's melody into rhythm, pace, pitch and pitch. They remember how things sound and may translate learning into rap or poetry. They are often musical and talk in more modulated tones. Auditoriums do well with strip recorders, addresses and discussion. Playing specific kinds of melodies in the backdrop while learning can make it proceed very quickly and be fun. Making rhyming or cutesy ringing out registers will help the auditory recall well.

The kinesthetic persons talk the slowest. They are feeling their way through life and often cannot discover except they are doing something. They state, “I get it.” when they realize, and “That doesn't fit.” when they don't. Kinesthetics need to move! If we're one, take BIG notes and always imagine yourself doing something with the material we are learning. If possible, skip the books and lectures and go directly to the action required to use what we're learning.
