Learning disability

A learning disability is a disorder in understanding or using spoken or written language. Learning disabilities are disorders that can affect a person's ability to acquire, understand, organize, store or use verbal and nonverbal information (Shelvin, 2004 p.15). These Learning disorders affect individuals who have a level of average intelligence or above average (Shapiro & Rich1999 p.121).

Causative factors

Some factors that may cause or influence these learning disabilities are:

Heredity or genetics

Learning disabilities typically affect members of the same family. The following situations in relation to problems that occur during pregnancy or childbirth may contribute to have learning problems includes illness or injury during or before birth, drug use or alcohol during pregnancy, premature delivery or long lack of oxygen or low birth weight. Injury head, malnutrition, poisoning Lead and child abuse can cause some learning disability (Mather & Nancy, 1995, 36).

Genetic or environmental conditions

A family history of learning disabilities, adoption, and family history of speech delay, along with exposure to environmental toxins lead to mental health issues in children of school going age (Lipson & Karen, 1997, 48). Other instances such as poverty are aggravating this issue itself. This factor is very important too, and it implies that when family histories of the above mentioned disabilities exit, parents should critically analyze their child learning abilities from birth. Excessive care should be taken by the pregnant female, residing in such a family as they can be linked with pre-birth genetic issues(Shapiro & Rich1999 p.122)..

Developmental milestones

The delay in cognitive abilities, which shows no object permanence, limited understanding of the relationship between means and ends is also a risk factor that leads to learning disabilities in children (Kulick, 1980, 69). This risk factor can be further explained when a child is unable to make sense of the fact that a jug has to contain water, or that we sit on a chair, or puzzle recognition.
